OUR PROJECTS
Lions are recognized worldwide
as leaders in the fight to eliminate blindness. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights of the Blind in the Crusade against Darkness." You may read a copy of Ms. Keller's speech here.) We are committed to supporting Campaign SightFirst II -
a worldwide programme to raise over $150million US towards research, rehabilitation and prevention of blindness. The original Campaign SightFirst raised over $175million US, and prevented blindness in over 24 million people, restored sight to over 4.6 million cataract sufferers, and built or upgraded over 250 eye care hospitals and clinics. Through SightFirst we have trained 68000 eye-care professionals and provided 65 million treatments for river blindness. The Gravenhurst Lions are proud to be a "Model Club" for Campaign SightFirst II by pledging $25,000US to the campaign.
Second only to the Lions' commitment to aiding the blind, is their total dedication to serving young people. Lions make a strong commitment to young people through youth outreach programmes. We support vision screening at local schools, school breakfast programmes, effective speaking, the Lions Peace Poster contest, youth exchange, Leo Clubs, Thrive - the Canadian Centre for positive Youth Development, and local sports.
